My cat has really brittle claws. Every time he gets into fights with strays some of his claws come off completely and the nail beds get infected. Right now there’s one particular claw that came off partly and is still stuck on his paw and giving off a bad smell. I’m treating it with the stuff the vet gave and it’s getting better but I’m just wondering why his claws are so brittle? I can’t even clip them because sometimes they splinter. There’s also black stuff growing on some claws.

I’m sorry to hear that Gordon has this going on. It sounds like he may have an underlying bacterial or fungal infection of the nail beds which causes them to be brittle. It is also possible that he has an immune disorder that causes it. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. They may recommend antibiotics or antifungal therapy for several weeks. If that does not resolve the issue then I would recommend a biopsy of one of the nail beds. Best of luck and I hope you find an answer. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
